Thanks for your post Elizabeth. I have changed some of the wording for this question to make it a bit clearer. I have also changed the hints a little bit. This question was written because most people have trouble with this. Teachers and engineers argue over it, and text books do not agree. The question is a learning tool. If you are close, that should be good enough. If you left out reactance that would be fine in all but the largest installations. If you added in the resistance of the neutral that would also be more accurate but not give a worst case scenario. If you used 240 volts that would also be more realistic. It the cables were already fully loaded that would make a difference too. This question was written to show people how to do the one in the NSW Skillspoint exam. It's an outrageous question to expect a fourth year apprentice to do but I think it will disappear soon.
