The Split Phase Motor uses a start winding with higher resistance than the run winding. The two windings are located 90 electrical degrees apart on the stator.
Because it has a higher resistance, it will cycle slightly differently from the run winding. The combined effect of these two windings creates an irregular magnetic field that rotates. It is irregular in speed and irregular in magnitude. All the same, it is better than just a pulsing magnetic field because it will create at least a little bit of Torque.
Once the motor is running, it will not need this winding. Which is a good thing, because it's probably getting hot and will need to be disconnected. (probably by a centrifugal switch.)
You can adjust the presets on this simulation above to see how the RMF in different single-phase motors compare.
